BioI'm one of the millions of people in the US who has to deal with chronic, severe pain. My condition is the result of two serious back injuries and a congenital defect. I have a compression fracture of the 1st lumbar vertebrae, several damaged disks and multiple intraspinal (Tarlov) cysts that are compressing the spinal nerve roots at the S2, S3, L1, L2 and L5 vertebrae. Although I'm able to walk, I often have to rely on canes for stability and support. I will typically have to resort to a wheelchair for two or three weeks during the winter. At present, there is no surgical treatment available. I've been disabled by the pain since November of 2004, although the original injury (the compression fracture) probably happened in 1975.
